Volunteering at Holyland Wood

If you wish to become a Holyland Wood volunteer please come along to our next Work Party or fill in the form on the Friends of Foundry House page noting your wish to volunteer at the woods. We encourage local volunteers who regularly visit Holyland Wood to report wildlife sightings and any significant problems and to join Work Parties.

Woodland maintenance is done entirely by volunteers, guided by Pembroke 21C Holyland Wood Management Group. Work parties usually take place seasonally on a Saturday morning, although other times and days are arranged for non-routine work and emergency repairs.

The type of work we undertake includes path and boardwalk clearance, cutting back overgrown vegetation, invasive species control and access maintenance of the car park.  We typically use simple hand tools; and when required, we call upon people who have suitable machinery for heavy work.

Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and age groups.  Physical work is designed to reflect these differences and to ensure that team work is enjoyable, as well as productive.  We are particularly interested in recruiting volunteers who have an interest in wildlife, especially those who have experience or skills in woodland management, conservation and habitat creation. We advertise our work parties via an email contact list, social media and by placing posters in prominent local positions.  For more information go to the Holyland Wood Blog page.  You may register your interest in becoming a volunteer on the Friends of Foundry House page noting your wish to volunteer at the woods.

In the past, volunteers have led public walks and carried out surveys of flora and fauna, including birds, moths, trees and fungi; reporting our records to local wildlife recorders.  By recording wildlife in the Wood, we hope to encourage members of the community to take pleasure in the natural world and appreciate its health-giving properties.

If you wish to share your comments, wildlife sightings or problems such as fly tipping, fallen trees or damage, please use the form on the Foundry House web site, using the link to the Holyland Wood Visit Report page.
